The "kriya yoga" and Vernacularism (In English. Translated from the Catalan language)

KRIYA YOGA AND VERNACULARISM

Here is the English translation of your  catalan text, formatted for clarity and readability:

I asked AI a question after reading a summary of this book: Autobiography of a Yogi, written by Paramahansa Yogananda and first published in 1946. It is one of the most influential and widely read spiritual books of the 20th century. This masterpiece of spiritual literature describes the author's extraordinary life and introduces Western (and Eastern) readers to the ancient science of Kriya Yoga and Vedic philosophy.

QUESTION TO THE A.I.

—Search and see if you can find any points of convergence between what Paramahansa Yogananda says and what Jordi Salat says about vernacularism.

ANSWER FROM THE A.I.

—Although Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952) writes from India's spiritual yoga tradition and Jordi Salat (1949) formulates his thought around vernacularism and the heterodox/spiritual Catalan tradition, there are fundamental points of convergence in their worldview.

Jordi Salat’s vernacularism is based on the revaluation of one's own spirit, native tradition (lo vernacle), connection with nature, and the transcendent dimension. Comparing Autobiography of a Yogi with vernacular philosophy reveals these main meeting points:

1. The Science of the Spirit and Modern Science (Quantum Physics)

  • Jordi Salat: Defends vernacularism in harmony with spiritualism and modern physics (such as that of Max Planck or Werner Heisenberg), postulating that behind matter lies a conscious mind or spirit supporting everything.

  • Yogananda: In Autobiography of a Yogi, he explains the miracles and phenomena of saints not as "magical methods," but as the application of higher scientific laws and the mastery of energy (prana or vibration).

  • Both authors agree that science and metaphysics or spirituality are not in conflict, but rather converge into the same underlying reality.

2. One's "Own Genius" and the Spiritual Dimension of Culture

  • Jordi Salat: Considers that every people or nation has its own "genius" or spiritual archetype, a cosmic memory linked to its land and roots.

  • Yogananda: Although he preaches a universal truth, he places immense emphasis on respecting a people's spiritual roots and legacy. He claims India’s heritage (the Vedic tradition) not as a closed nationalist doctrine, but as this civilization's genuine and "vernacular" contribution to the common good of humanity.

3. Critique of Modern Materialism and Skepticism

  • Jordi Salat: Rejects the emptiness of modern Western society, dominated by skepticism, uncritical materialism, and the neglect of life's sacred dimension.

  • Yogananda: Journeying to the West in the 1920s, Yogananda diagnosed that the West had achieved excellent mastery over the material world but suffered from a profound spiritual hunger. His message proposed balancing Western efficiency with Eastern spiritual depth.

4. Primordial Unity or "Cosmic Harmony"

  • Jordi Salat: Takes inspiration from thinkers like Ramon Llull or the tradition of cosmic harmony, seeking the living truth that manifests in the order of nature.

  • Yogananda: The central pillar of Kriya Yoga and Yogananda's teachings is Self-Realization: the direct perception that the individual soul is part of the same Cosmic Consciousness that governs the universe.

Summary of Convergence

In essence, both thinkers—from different geographical and cultural contexts—agree that human beings cannot be reduced to matter or social mechanics. Both maintain that returning to truth (whether through one's own "vernacular" root or through yoga meditation) is the way to overcome the spiritual crisis of the modern world.

Note:

On page 159 of Paramahansa Yogananda's aforementioned book, there is a footnote that I quote verbatim and in its entirety, which mentions the dove and places it in its proper context: "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light" (Matthew 6:22). During deep meditation, the single eye or spiritual eye becomes internally visible at the center of the forehead. In the scriptures, the omniscient eye is referred to as the third eye, the Star of the East, the inner eye, the dove descending from heaven, the eye of Shiva, the intuitive eye, etc.

Vernacularism finds its most elemental symbolic reference in the dove representing the Holy Spirit, which carries the faculty of the gift of tongues.
